Lesson 2: Team Assignment
Researching Hurricane Katrina
This lesson will allow students to explore Hurricane Katrina and is designed to support inquiry- and discovery-based learning, as well as Earth system science, investigative case-based, field-based, and traditional disciplinary instructional approaches.
Scenario: On August 29th, 2005, Hurricane Katrina, the third major hurricane of the 2005 season, struck the Gulf Coast of the United States. The Category 4 hurricane struck with extreme force, causing nearly $80 billion in damages and taking over 1,300 lives.
Task: How did Hurricane Katrina impact the economy and environment?
Team Assignment:
- Brainstorm a list of questions you think you need to answer to understand the Hurricane Katrina.
- Find data about evacuation routes.
- Post your questions in the Discussion Space.
- Review your teammates' questions.
- List the key questions and plan how to investigate them as a Team.
- List answers to your questions as you build knowledge together.
- By the end develop a Team Hurricane Disaster Plan and upload it.
- As a Team you will present your findings using a Web 2.0 application tool.
- No reading the content/presentation - learn the content so you can discuss it.
- Since all the information will not reside on the slides, use the notes section when necessary.
- Use examples to reinforce your content.
The deliverables for this assignment are:
- Construct a Team Knowledge-Building assignment document, which each member of the team will upload keep in mind each team member should upload the same Hurricane Disaster Plan document.
- Your Team presentation should contain at least one interactive component and must be no more than five minutes.
